Weekly Update 12-20-13

Important Announcements:

* There is nothing better than experiencing the excitement of Christmas through the perspective of children.  This week was filled with lots of fun and many moments that made me smile.  I will be spending the vacation time with family and friends.  My family will be traveling to Washington, Indiana to spend some time with our extended family, too.  Whatever your plans are, I pray for happiness, peace, joy, safety, and many wonderful memories for each and every one of you.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!   

*Our class was drawn this week for good behavior.  Our reward was to have VIP seating for our special Silly Safari program on Wednesday.  The Silly Safari was earned by the school for accumulating 20,000 behavior tickets.  Our class had great seats and several of us were chosen by the presenter to be part of the show and hold some animals.  Each of us got to pet the reindeer Noel, too.  The children loved the program!  We will be working towards our next goal when we return from Christmas Break.

*We took the SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory) on Wednesday.  This is a computerized test that assesses your child’s reading comprehension.  A second grader should fall in the range of 300 – 600.  I sent your child’s score home on Thursday.  I was very proud of the growth the class has made this school year. 

*Thank you to those of you that sent in a copy of How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  I returned the book to the owners today so your child should have brought his/her copy home if they brought one to school.  Because second grade won the penny war, the grade level received a snack while watching the movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas on Thursday. 

*The next PTSG meeting will take place on Thursday, January 9^th at 6:30 p.m. in our cafeteria.  Mark your calendar!

*Our next All Pro Dad’s event will take place on Friday, January 10^th.  Please see the attached flyer for more information about the program. 

*PTSG is hosting Family Game Night on Friday, January 10^th at 7:00 p.m. 

*Our second nine weeks has ended!  Report cards will be issued on Friday, January 10^th.

Important Announcements:

*It was great seeing all of you Monday evening at the music program.  The children did such a great job!  I would like to thank the children and Mrs. Dziadosz for all of their hard work! 

*Mr. Marc Dahmer, meteorologist for the National Weather Service, came in on Wednesday and presented information about weather to the children.  They were great listeners and had some great questions for him.  I was very proud of them! 

*We are going to have some special spirit days next week.

Monday – Winter Wonderland (wear white)

Wednesday – Wear Green / Riley Stuffed Animal Day $1.00.  Your child may bring a stuffed animal to school if he/she brings in $1.00 donation to benefit Riley Children’s Hospital.  The stuffed animal should be able to fit in your child’s book bag.

Thursday - Let your holiday spirit shine (wear shiny, sparkly, or dress up)

*Next week we will be taking the Scholastic Reading Inventory.  We are scheduled to take it on Wednesday, December 18^th.  This is the computerized reading comprehension test that generates your child’s lexile.  A second grader should have a lexile that falls in the range of 300 – 600.  I will be sending your child’s score home after we have taken the test. 

*We will be reading Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas next week.  We could use your help!  If you have any copies of the book at home that we could borrow next week, we would greatly appreciate it if you would send them in.  Make sure your name is in the book so we can return it to the right family!  Thanks so much! 

*We will have spelling next week.  The words will be words from the story and are rhyming words.  The words went home today on a green piece of paper.  The words are: tree, glee, who, two, shove, dove, feast, beast, pinch, Grinch, flash, and hash. 

*Our annual Christmas Sing-a-long will take place on Friday, December 20^th at 2:30 p.m.! 

*Our second nine weeks is coming to an end quickly!  The end of the nine weeks is Friday, December 20^th!  Report cards will be issued on Friday, January 10^th.

Important Announcements:

*We are so excited!  Second grade won the change drive to benefit Brownsburg families.  Our second graders will receive a special treat before Christmas break.  However, the real winners are the Brownsburg families that will benefit from our generosity this holiday season. 

*Our second graders have been working so hard for the upcoming music program.  The time has come to show off all of their hard work!  Our program will take place on Monday, December 9^th.  The program starts at 6:30.  Your child will need to be dropped off at the classroom at 6:10 p.m.  I have attached a flyer from Mrs. Dziadosz that outlines important information including what your child should wear to the program.  I am looking forward to seeing all of you there! 

*Our class will be able to shop in the Santa Shoppe on Tuesday, December 10^th during our specials time.  This is the ONLY time that we will have available to shop.  Envelopes went home this week that you can fill out and send back in with your child’s money if you want him/her to participate in Santa Shoppe.  Happy Shopping! 

*Our Unit 5 math test will take place on Wednesday, December 11^th. 

*Our annual Christmas Sing-a-long will take place on Friday, December 20^th at 2:30 p.m.!

*Dylan will be celebrating his birthday on November 30^th.  Happy Birthday, Brendan! 

*Today we had our fall party.  It was a blast!  Thank you so much to Mrs. Fought for organizing a fantastic party.  I would also like to thank the families that donated to make the party a success.  These families were: The Dougherty Family, The Fought Family, The Hart Family, The Higgins Family, The LaRoche Family, The Matthews Family, The Rowe Family, The Scheumann Family, The Sylva Family, and the Thompson Family.  Thanks so much to the parents that were able to come to the party and celebrate with us.  The parents that attended were: Mrs. Dougherty, Mrs. Fought, Mrs. Hart, Mrs. Higgins, Mrs. LaRoche, Mr. Matthews, Mrs. Rowe, Mrs. Sinclair, Mr. and Mrs. Sylva, Mr. Utterback, Mrs. Walker, and Mrs. Williams. ****If I forgot to mention a parent that participated or a family that donated, it was not intentional!

*Today I am sending home the yellow Family Letter that I send home each Friday with the spelling words.  However, we will NOT have a test over the spelling words next week.  I think the activities are useful activities for you to do at home with your child, and we will still be talking about compound words next week during reading. 

*Our Fall Party will take place on Wednesday, November 27^th from 2:00 – 2:45.  Thank you so much to Mrs. Fought for organizing our party.  I would also like to thank the parents that donated items and plan on volunteering during our party.  I know the children will have a great time!

Important Announcements:

*Congratulations to: Brendan and Luke for being drawn from the paw bucket last week and Abigail for being drawn from the paw bucket this week! 

*Our class won the class drawing last week and this week!  The students enjoyed a special dining area in the cafeteria this week, and next Friday, they will get to eat with Mrs. Greene! 

*Our room mom, Mrs. Fought, is in the process of organizing our Fall Party that will take place on Wednesday, November 27^th from 2:00 – 2:45.  If you are interested in donating anything for the party or coming in and volunteering for the party please contact Mrs. Fought at lsinclairfought@hotmail.com. 

*In reading this week, I began taking a fluency grade.  This grade will be determined by the number of words your child reads correctly in a one minute timed reading passage.  When I enter it in the grade book it will be entered as Fluency 68, Fluency 69, Fluency 70, etc.  The number after the word fluency is the number of words that your child is expected to read in a minute.  That number will increase each week to meet the end of the year goal of 87 words in a minute.  I will convert your child’s score into a percentage and then enter it in the grade book out of 10 points. For example, if your child read 56 words, his/her percentage would be 56/68 = 82%.  I would enter this is the grade book as 8.2/10.  If you would like to practice timing your child while reading, the Wednesday reading homework would be a good passage to use to do this.   

*Discover Indy fundraiser started Friday, November 8^th and will continue until November 22^nd.  The books are $25.00 each and 40% of the sale comes back directly to the school! Our goal this year is to have 400 books sold by the end of the sales period. 

*We will be having a book fair the week of November 18^th – 22^nd.  Your child will have a chance to shop at the book fair on Tuesday, November 19^th.  That is the ONLY time they will be able to shop.   If your child wants to shop, he/she will need to bring money in on Tuesday!   

*November 18^th – 22^nd we will be having the Eliminate Hunger for the Holidays food drive to benefit Brownsburg families.  The class that donates the most items will win a prize!   Items that should be donated are:

Weekly Update 11/08/15

Important Announcements:

*Our room mom, Mrs. Fought, is in the process of organizing our Fall Party that will take place on Wednesday, November 27^th from 2:00 – 2:45.  If you are interested in donating anything for the party or coming in and volunteering for the party please contact Mrs. Fought at lsinclairfought@hotmail.com. 

*Tuesday, November 7^th would traditionally be Election Day in the United States.  During our government unit, the class campaigned for best snack and held a mock election on Tuesday.  All campaigns did a FANTASTIC job with writing speeches and making campaign posters and buttons.  Popsicle won the election for best snack.  We even enjoyed a popsicle snack in honor of its victory on Wednesday! 

*We took our SRI test on Wednesday, November 6^th.  A second grader should have a lexile that falls in a 300 – 600 range.  Today I will send home a report showing your child’s SRI scores so far in second grade.  Your child’s score from Wednesday is the last data point.  If you have any questions regarding the report, or your child’s scores, please contact me! 

*This week we finished up writing letters to a Disney character.  We practiced addressing an envelope as well, and I sent the letters home in an envelope with your child when he/she completed the letter.  If you want to put a stamp on the letter and send it to Disney, Disney should send your child back a postcard! 

*While we were working on things this week such as filling out a voter registration card and putting a return address on envelopes, it became very clear that many students do not know their addresses.  Knowing the address and phone numbers are important skills that every child should know for his/her safety.  This might be a good skill to review with your child to make sure he/she has it! 

*Next week I will be introducing the addition strategy of partial sums to your child.  While some children already know how to do the more traditional method of adding two two-digit numbers by carrying, I am going to ask that while I am introducing / teaching this method that you help your child practice partial sums.  I tell the students all of the time that there are many ways to reach an answer in math, and I will be introducing carrying later on in the year.  I want every child to be exposed to and comfortable with partial sums as well.  Thanks for your support in this!

*I hope everyone had a wonderful Fall Break!  I sure did!  I was able to get a lot of things done, but I missed the kids so much!  I am glad to be back at school! 

*Thank you to those of you that came to Chick-Fil-A night on Wednesday.  It was great seeing so many children dressed in costume and supporting our school.  It was a fantastic evening!

Important Announcements:

*Our school set a school-wide goal of achieving 16,000 behavior tickets by Wednesday, October 9^th.  We were able to meet this goal and got extra recess today! 

*Reading is a vital part of educational success.  Mrs. Greene is sending home an OPTIONAL reading calendar to encourage reading over fall break.  If your child reads for 15 minutes at least ten days over break, he/she can earn a crazy hat day.  I plan on doing this, and I encourage EVERY child to participate in this with me! 

*Spelling words went home today in the Family Times newsletter printed on yellow paper.  They always go home the Friday before so that your child has a week to study them.  The words can be found under Day 4, and they are highlighted.  We do take the tests on the computer using www.spellingcity.com/awhisman. 

*Report cards will be available online starting TODAY Friday, October 11^th. 

*It was great meeting with each of you about your child’s progress so far in second grade.  I look forward to working together to ensure that your child has a positive, successful year! 

*Fall Break is October 14^th – October 27^th.  Enjoy!  I will be spending some time on home improvement projects, spending some quality time with my dog Ellie and my friends and family, and planning the perfect outfit for the Chick-Fil-A Teacher Night.  Whatever your plans are for this break, I hope you have fun, relax, and stay safe! 

*Over fall break, two students will celebrate their birthdays!  CeCe will celebrate her birthday on Friday, October 25^th!  Justin will celebrate his birthday on Sunday, October 27^th!  Happy Birthday, CeCe and Justin! 

*When we return to school after Fall Break, we will be celebrating College Go! Week with special spirit days.  The days are:

We are pleased to announce that your child and staff at Delaware Trail helped set a new JAM world record for the most people exercising at one time for a healthy lifestyle.  On Thursday, September 26th, 1,354,714 people did a series of exercises to music. Several senior football players and our favorite Brownsburg bulldog helped lead us.  Congratulations DT!

*Parent / Teacher conferences will be held Wednesday, October 9^th and Thursday, October 10^th.  I will do my very best to keep on schedule.  Please help me out by making sure you are on time to your scheduled conference.  If for some reason you can no longer attend the conference at the date and time scheduled, please let me know immediately so we can get it rescheduled. 

*We will have a very special guest speaker with us on Wednesday, October 9^th.  Kim Brown, sister of author Marc Brown, will be speaking to the second grade from 10:10 – 11:10.  What a great opportunity for us! 

*Fall Break is October 14^th – October 27^th.  Enjoy! 

*PTSG is sponsoring a Dine to Donate at the Avon Chick-Fil-A on Wednesday, October 30^th from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Students are encouraged to attend and wear their costumes.  Fun! 

*Mrs. Dziadosz and Mrs. Fowler are already preparing for our Veteran’s Day program.  Please see the flier attached to the weekly e-mail if you would like to honor a veteran during the program! 

*I believe in building relationships with the children both inside my classroom and outside the classroom.  If your child participates in any extracurricular activities (sports, dance, theater, etc.), or has any other events that he/she would like to invite me to, please let me know, and I will do my best to come!
