Weekly Update 10/31/14

Important Announcements:

*Welcome back!  I hope you all had a fun-filled and restful Fall Break!  I was very excited to come back and hear about all of the different things you all did!

*Next week we will be reading a picture book called The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush.  This is not in our reading book.  Your child will not have any reading homework next week.  We will take a
reading counts quiz over this book on the computer on Friday.

*We will not have any spelling next week.  Enjoy the week off!

*All next week we will be having a coin drive at Delaware Trail Elementary.  Funds collected will be used to purchase gifts, food, and household goods for families in need within Brownsburg during the holiday season. We will be having a grade level competition to see which grade can fill the most gallon milk jugs by Friday.  All next week, students may bring in coins to donate to their grade's total. The winning grade level will get to wear pajamas and watch a movie.  Thanks so much for your support of this worthwhile cause!

*On Wednesday we took our October Scholastic Reading Inventory.  Yesterday I sent home a reading list that Scholastic generated based on your child’s score.  I will be sending the graphs home today.  The way the report looks has changed slightly since the last time I sent home your child’s progress.

*Thank you to those of you that came to our annual Chick-Fil-A dine to donate on Wednesday evening.  It was a great success!  Our school earned over $500 at this event!

*Brownsburg Community School Corporation is hosting an EveryDay Math Night for second grade parents on Wednesday, November 12th at White Lick Elementary from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.  This evening is designed to help you have a greater understanding of math achievement and the math progression in our corporation, ways to help your child with homework, and fun and easy math games that you can play at home with your child.  I think this evening will be incredibly beneficial for you so mark your calendars and plan on attending!

*Continue to work on addition and subtraction math facts.  Make sure to use those fact triangles that were sent home, or you can practice for free online at www.xtramath.org.  Let me know if you need the log-in information sent home again.

*If anyone is able to come in and volunteer next week, send me an e-mail and let me know what day and time works best for you!  Thanks!

*I believe in building relationships with the children both inside my classroom and outside the classroom.  If your child participates in any extracurricular activities (sports, dance, theater, etc.), or has any other events that he/she would like to invite me to, please let me know, and I will do my best to come!

*The blog will also be updated with this information as well so if you need to see it again visit http://misswhisman.blogspot.com .

*I sent home a reading calendar for your child to complete over Fall Break.  If your child reads, completes the reading calendar, and returns it to school on Monday, October 27, 2014, he/she will be invited to a special neon dance party.  Happy reading!

*Our annual Chick-Fil-A dine to donate will take place on Wednesday, October 29th at the Chick-Fil-A in Avon.  If you eat at this Chick-Fil-A location between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., and mention our school’s name, we will receive 20% of the profits!  Also, between the hours of 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., staff members will be there in costumes.  Come during those hours, and wear your costumes, too!

Weekly Update 10/03/14

Important Announcements:

*Today marks the end of the first nine weeks.  Report cards will be available online starting Friday, October 10, 2014.  Next week’s grades will count towards the second nine weeks, and there is a chance with conferences that I will not get next week’s grades updated until sometime during Fall Break.

*Parent/Teacher conferences will be held on Wednesday and Thursday evening.  I sent e-mail reminders last night about your child’s conference date and time.  My schedule is very tight with most conferences back-to-back with another conference.  Conferences will have to end on time so please be prompt so that we can begin your child’s conference on time.  If you need to reschedule your child’s conference for any reason, please contact me as soon as possible.

*As the time for conference approaches I thought I would share the e-mail addresses of the special area teachers in case you have questions about classroom grades and/or assignments:

Art- swhitton@brownsburg.k12.in.us

*Our Fall Party will be next Friday, October 10th.  It will start at 2:30 p.m. and end at 3:15 p.m.  Because of our party, our specials schedule has changed on Friday.  We will go to our Friday special from 1:00 – 1:45.

*Our Unit 3 math test will be next Friday, October 10th.

*Mrs. Wood’s class is celebrating Socktober and is collecting new socks of any size to be donated to homeless shelters.  If you are interested in helping out, you can send in any sock donation, and we will make sure it gets to Mrs. Wood.
