Weekly Update 08/29/14

Important Announcements:

*Happy Labor Day!  Enjoy the long weekend!

*Because of Labor Day, our Monday special will be moved to Friday.  We will not have computer lab as a special next week.  We will have music on Friday.

*I think there has been some confusion about timed tests.  Fact fluency is an important skill that will help your child be successful in mathematics.  We take weekly timed tests to help assess our fact fluency.  These tests are graded; however, they do not go in the grade book.  We have daily math facts practice during class, and I encourage you to work with your child on math facts at home as well.

*Dictation test scores were pretty low this week.  When we take the dictation test on Thursday, I remind students before the test that the only three things I grade dictation for are: capital letters at the beginning of the sentence, the correct end punctuation mark, and that the spelling words are spelled correctly.  I know spelling words were a bit more challenging this week, but I am still surprised at home many students forget to capitalize the beginning of the sentences (even with multiple reminders)!  This is something that we are going to continue to work on in class.  You can reinforce this at home by having your child write answers in complete sentences and checking to make sure those sentences have capital letters and correct end punctuation marks.

*Thank you to those who have already sent in pictures of your child out and about in Brownsburg.  We have been studying geography during social studies.  We are going to be talking about the geography of Brownsburg.  As you are out and about in town, if you do not mind taking your child’s picture in front of businesses, neighborhoods, parks, etc. and sending it to me, I would greatly appreciate it!  Taking a picture on your cell phone and e-mailing it to me electronically is fine!  This will become part of our geography display.  Thanks for your help with this!

*If anyone is able to come in and volunteer next week, send me an e-mail and let me know what day and time works best for you!  Thanks!

*We took our spelling test on the computer again today, and the children did a great job!  Your child also took the reading test on paper.  After he/she was done, I had him/her enter it in the computer using the Reading Street website to practice taking the test online.  Stapled to your child’s reading test is his/her computer test.  Some students changed their answers when taking the computer test, and I counted the answers on the written reading test since that was taken first.  Next week we are only going to take the reading test on the computer.  We will not take a paper copy first.

*I believe in building relationships with the children both inside my classroom and outside the classroom.  If your child participates in any extracurricular activities (sports, dance, theater, etc.), or has any other events that he/she would like to invite me to, please let me know, and I will do my best to come!

*The blog will also be updated with this information as well so if you need to see it again visit http://misswhisman.blogspot.com .
