Welcome Back to School! / Weekly Update 08/02/13

Important Announcements:

*Welcome back to the 2013-2014 school year!  I am so excited that I have had a chance to meet all of you either at Supply Drop Off or on the first day of school. I know this year is going to be a fantastic one!

*Today your child will bring home a pamphlet that will have next week’s spelling words in it (we highlighted them today in class to show you where to look), tell you what reading skill we will be learning about it, and gives you daily suggested activities you can do with your child.  This is NOT homework.  However, those highlighted words are your child’s spelling words.  These are the words he/she will be tested on Friday, August 9th.

*Next week we are jumping right in to academic subjects.  We will be taking a reading and spelling test on Friday and a dictation test on Thursday.  The reading test will cover phonics, vocabulary words, and applying the reading skill.  The dictation test will be graded for correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling words spelled correctly.

*Dibels testing will take place next week.  I will be testing your child in the area of nonsense word fluency, reading fluency, and reading retell.

*Your child will have homework Monday – Thursday next week.  The homework will be in the area of reading and English.  There will be no math homework yet.

*Smile!  August 14th will be picture day!

*Mark your calendars from Tuesday, August 20th.  That is Open House from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.  Open House is where you come into the classroom, and I will be presenting information to you about your child’s year.  I will cover a lot of information so it is important you attend if you can.  If you are unable to attend, I will send the information home with your child the next day.  Unlike previous years, teachers will only be doing one presentation this evening.  This event is for parents only; children should not attend.

*I sent home a contact magnet with your child or gave you one at supply drop off.  My e-mail address is: awhisman@brownsburg.k12.in.us or my phone number is 317-852-1062 ext. 1332.
