Weekly Update 02/22/13

Important Announcements:

*Mrs. Van Curen has been teaching our class about expanding their expression on Mondays.  We are asking that your child bring something from home that fits in his/her bookbag that he/she can write about.  Please do not allow your child to bring in any electronics or anything that is alive for this writing assignment.  J  Your child will need to have it on Monday, February 25th.  Thanks!

*I am doing a reading incentive in the classroom that started on Monday and will continue through Friday, March 22nd.  Your child has a sticker chart with 26 spaces on it.  When he/she reads a book and passes a reading counts quiz over the book, he/she can earn stickers for the chart.  Each book has a point value.  Most books are worth one point, but some of the books are worth two and three points.  A sticker will be awarded for each point of the book so a book worth two points will receive two stickers.  The first time your child fills the chart, he/she will earn a reward.  The second time a chart is filled, he/she will be invited to a pizza party with Miss Whisman.  The kids are really excited about this, and the goal is to encourage them to read as much as possible!

*Information about the second grade penny war to benefit Kids against Hunger came home on Tuesday.  The penny war will take place the week of March 11th and the winning class will earn a reward.  However, the real reward will come on Friday, March 22nd when the second grade comes together to do the food pack to benefit hungry families all around the world.  We will need parent volunteers for this so mark your calendar if you are interested in helping out!

*The February Book-It calendar was sent home on Monday, February 4th.  Your child will need to complete the reading and return the calendar on Thursday, February 28th.  Happy reading!

*A note from Mrs. Hopkins:

Dear Parents:

My students and I would like to invite you to our annual Come Play with Me day in physical education.  This a fun experience at school with your child and other parents in your class.  It will be held the week of February 25-28 during your child’s physical education class.  Don’t forget to bring your tennis shoes and comfy clothes so you can participate with your child.  We look forward to seeing you in a few weeks.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Hopkins

If you plan on coming to Come Play with Me, please make sure you have a criminal background check on file.  Also, siblings are not allowed to attend.   Thanks!

*The Spring Fling is quickly approaching!  It will be held on Friday, March 1st.  Our classroom basket theme is school supplies so if you would like to donate to the basket, you may begin sending in those donations.  Donations are due by Monday, February 25th.  Any donations of 2-liters, suckers, individually-wrapped candy, all sizes of candy bars, and baked goods are also greatly appreciated! Soda and candy donations are due by Monday, February 25, and baked goods can be sent in on Thursday, February 28th, and Friday, March 1st.  If you are interested in volunteering for the event or have any questions, you may contact Melissa Myers at myers243@yahoo.com or 317-374-8148 (call/text) to get more information about volunteering or donating.
