Weekly Update 04/11/14

Important Announcements:
*Ainsley celebrated her birthday on Tuesday, April 8th.  Happy Birthday, Ainsley!
*I have decided to extend the reading competition until the end of April.  I REALLY want to eat pizza with your child!  Spring Break would be a great time to read some books.  Encourage your child to continue to read and take Reading Counts tests while at school!
*There will be NO spelling or reading homework next week!  Next week would be a great week to spend time reading books for reading counts quizzes!
*For our poetry unit, your child will need to bring in a picture of something he/she loves.  It can be a picture of your family, a family pet, a favorite animal, favorite food, etc.  Your child will need to put his/her name on the back of the picture so that it can be returned.  Pictures should be brought in by Thursday, April 17th!  Thanks!
*At this point in the year, your child should have mastery of all of his/her addition math and subtraction math facts.  Mastery would be 100% on the five minute weekly time test.  Practice those math facts!  In third grade your child will be expected to have mastery of multiplication and division facts.  I have already introduced multiplication and division to your child, and we will be working more on multiplication and division facts in upcoming chapters.
*Thank you SO MUCH to all of you that participated in our penny war this week!  I know the students enjoyed participating in the war and all of the money will be donated to Relay for Life.  I will announce a total that second grade raised soon!
*Smile!  Spring pictures will be taken on April 16th.
*Our next school-wide goal for behavior tickets is 25,000.
*This year's Relay for Life will be Saturday, May 17th - Sunday, May 18th from 9:30am-9:30am on the Town Hall Green.  I will be doing Relay for Life this year in honor of all of my family members that have fought cancer, but especially in memory of my father that lost his battle to pancreatic cancer in January of 2012.  This is a family friendly event so join our team!  It's going to be a lot of fun and we hope you will join in to make a huge difference!  You can join our team by visiting our team page at: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?team_id=1501859&pg=team&fr_id=58499&fl=en_US&et=jBA1EedW0kb81W1fpTi0wA&s_tafId=1292306
*A field trip is in the works for second grade.  I will have more details as they become available.
*Track and Field has been moved to Friday, May 30th.  Mark your calendar!
*I believe in building relationships with the children both inside my classroom and outside the classroom.  If your child participates in any extracurricular activities (sports, dance, theater, etc.), or has any other events that he/she would like to invite me to, please let me know, and I will do my best to come!
*The blog will also be updated with this information as well so if you need to see it again visit http://misswhisman.blogspot.com .
