Important Announcements:
*We took the Scholastic
Reading Inventory (SRI) on Tuesday, August 19th. When your child takes this computerized test,
it will generate a score based on how well your child reads passages and
answers multiple choice questions. This
test scores your child’s reading comprehension.
Last week I said a second grader should score between 300 – 600. Scholastic has recently updated their
lexiles, and they are now saying that a second grader should be between 420 –
654. I will send home the report on Monday because there were issues with the
Scholastic network this week. Luckily,
we were able to get our test done! Many
of the students scored a BR and were not given a number. Historically, I find this to be the case at
the beginning of second grade. The
students have not had much exposure to taking SRI. We will take SRI once a month in second
grade, and I would anticipate scores to increase each time we take it. Many students that scored a BR this time will
increase dramatically the next couple of times we take it simply because they
are getting used to the format.
*Thank you to those who have
already sent in pictures of your child out and about in Brownsburg. We have been studying geography during social
studies. We are going to be talking
about the geography of Brownsburg. As
you are out and about in town, if you do not mind taking your child’s picture
in front of businesses, neighborhoods, parks, etc. and sending it to me, I
would greatly appreciate it! Taking a
picture on your cell phone and e-mailing it to me electronically is fine! This will become part of our geography
display. Thanks for your help with this!
*If anyone is able to come in
and volunteer next week, send me an e-mail and let me know what day and time
works best for you! Thanks!
*We took our spelling test on
the computer again today, and the children did a great job! Your child also took the reading test on
paper. After he/she was done, I had
him/her enter it in the computer using the Reading Street website to practice
taking the test online. Stapled to your
child’s reading test is his/her computer test.
Some students changed their answers when taking the computer test, and I
counted the answers on the written reading test since that was taken
first. Eventually, the students will
only take the test on the computer.
*Speaking of Reading Street,
on Monday I will be sending home your child’s access code and password for
Reading Street. You can use the website
as a resource. The reading book can be
found online there as well. No
assignments will be given outside of
school through this website.
*Our first math test will
take place on Tuesday, August 26th.
We will review in class for the test on Monday. Your child will have a study guide for
homework Monday evening. We will begin
Unit 2 on Wednesday, August 27th.
*We are working very hard on
expectations while doing math stations.
Once we have perfected this, we will be doing math stations almost
daily.
*I believe in building relationships with the children both
inside my classroom and outside the classroom.
If your child participates in any extracurricular activities (sports,
dance, theater, etc.), or has any other events that he/she would like to invite
me to, please let me know, and I will do my best to come!
*The blog will also be updated with this information as well
so if you need to see it again visit http://misswhisman.blogspot.com
